Tropheus sp. 'crescentic' Mkuyu / Isonga - F1 ( 2 inches )
Key Characteristics of Tropheus sp. 'crescentic' Mkuyu
-
Crescent Tail: The defining physical feature of this species is its crescent-shaped (lyre-shaped) tail fin, which distinguishes it from other Tropheus species (like T. brichardi) that have straight or slightly concave tails.
-
Eye Color: They possess distinctive light blue eyes.
-
Appearance (Mkuyu variant): This specific population is found between Mkuyu and north of Segunga. In the aquarium hobby, it was long misidentified as "Tropheus Isonga" (Isonga is actually 100 km south, where this species does not exist). It is characterized by a yellow spot near the pectoral fins, which sometimes extends onto the gill cover.
-
Size: Adults grow to about 14 cm (males) and 12 cm (females).
Aquarium Care
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 400 liters (length of at least 150 cm) is recommended.
-
Environment: A rocky setup with fine sand and plenty of hiding places. Visual barriers are necessary to manage aggression.
-
Water Parameters: pH must be high (7.5–9.5), and temperature should be stable at 25–27°C. High oxygen levels are crucial.
-
Social Structure: Should be kept in large groups (15–25 fish) to distribute intra-specific aggression.
Diet & Breeding
-
Diet: Strictly herbivorous (grazers of aufwuchs). They should be fed high-quality spirulina flakes. Avoid high-protein foods to prevent "bloat."
-
Breeding: They are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry 6 to 16 eggs for about 24–26 days.
