Key Characteristics of Tropheus brichardi 'Katonga'

  • Appearance: This variant is typically dark green to blue-brown. In rocky environments without much sediment, vertical stripes are more visible. A key identifying feature for "true" T. brichardi (according to African Diving Ltd) is a light yellow spot on the belly.

  • Size: Adults grow to approximately 14 cm (males) and 12 cm (females).

  • Habitat (Biotop): They inhabit rocky environments but are known for their tolerance of sediment-rich areas, allowing them to live in shallower waters than some other Tropheus species.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 400 liters (length of at least 150 cm) is recommended.

  • Environment: The aquarium should have a fine sand substrate and plenty of rocks to provide hiding places and visual barriers.

  • Water Parameters: pH must be above 7.5 (7.5–9.5). Temperature should be kept stable between 25–27°C (must not exceed 29°C due to oxygen needs).

  • Social Structure: They should be kept in large groups (15–25 fish) to manage their high levels of aggression. The ratio should be 3–4 females per male.

Diet & Breeding

  • Diet: Strictly herbivorous. They graze on algae (aufwuchs) in nature. In captivity, they require high-quality spirulina flakes and should avoid high-protein foods to prevent "bloat."

  • Breeding: They are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry 6 to 16 large eggs for about 24–26 days. Unlike many other mouthbrooders, Tropheus females often continue to feed while carrying their young.
