Tropheus moorii 'Kasanga' Red Rainbow - WILD - ( 5 - 6 inches )
Key Characteristics of Tropheus moorii 'Kasanga'
-
Common Name: Red Rainbow.
-
Appearance: This variant is found along the southern Tanzanian coast between the Kalambo River and Bomani Point. It is characterized by:
-
A yellow patch on the lower part of the body.
-
A red dorsal fin featuring a variable number of small blue dots.
-
It is also known for producing "Kushangaza" mutants (sometimes mistakenly called OB), which develop unusual blotches as they mature.
-
-
Size: Adults reach approximately 14 cm (males) and 12 cm (females).
-
Habitat (Biotop): They inhabit rocky environments.
Aquarium Care
-
Tank Size: At least 400 liters (length of 150 cm or more).
-
Environment: Fine sand substrate with plenty of rocks to provide territory, hiding spots, and visual barriers to manage aggression.
-
Water Chemistry: pH must be between 7.5 and 9.5. Temperature should be stable between 25–27°C (must not exceed 29°C due to oxygen requirements).
-
Social Structure: Keep in large groups of 15–25 individuals to distribute intra-specific aggression. A ratio of 3–4 females per male is ideal.
Diet & Breeding
-
Diet: Strictly herbivorous. In the wild, they graze on algae (aufwuchs). In an aquarium, use high-quality spirulina flakes and strictly avoid high-protein foods to prevent "bloat."
-
Breeding: They are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry 6 to 16 large eggs (5–7 mm) for about 24–26 days and typically continue to feed while brooding.
