  • Scientific Name: Tropheus moorii (often referred to as Tropheus cf. moorii)

  • Geographic Variety: 'Izinga Island' (Tanzania)

  • Natural Habitat: Found in rocky environments (biotope) along the southeastern coast of Lake Tanganyika.

  • Adult Size: Approximately 14 cm for males and 12 cm for females.

Appearance

The 'Izinga Island' variant is part of a group found between Kitango Rocks and Taala Point. Key features include:

  • Body: Characterized by a yellow spot/patch on the lower part of the body.

  • Fins: Dominant males typically display a blue dorsal fin.

  • Females/Subdominants: Females and non-dominant males usually have a yellowish dorsal fin, which may occasionally show hints of blue.

Aquarium Care

  • Minimum Tank Size: 400 liters (approx. 100+ gallons) with a length of at least 150 cm.

  • Water Parameters: * pH: Must be above 7.5 (ideally 7.5–9.5).

    • Temperature: Constant 25–27°C (never exceed 29°C).

    • Oxygen: Requires high oxygen levels (achieved via air pumps or strong surface agitation).

  • Setup: Use fine sand and many rocks to create caves and visual barriers to manage aggression.

Diet & Behavior

  • Diet: Herbivore. In the wild, they graze on "aufwuchs" (biofilm/algae on rocks). In captivity, high-quality spirulina flakes are recommended. Avoid high-protein foods, as they are prone to "bloat."

  • Social Structure: Highly territorial and aggressive. It is best to keep them in large groups (15–25 individuals) to distribute aggression, with a ratio of at least 3–4 females per male.

  • Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry eggs/fry for about 24–26 days. Unlike many other cichlids, Tropheus females may continue to eat while holding fry.
