Pseudotropheus Demasoni (3.5 - 4 inches)

Rs. 200.00

The Pseudotropheus demasoni is a dwarf mbuna cichlid from Lake Malawi, specifically found around Pombo Rocks and Ndumbi Reef. Despite their small size, they are famous among enthusiasts for their bold "big fish" personality and striking, uniform patterns.

Visual Identification

  • Pattern: They feature crisp, vertical bars of deep midnight blue and vibrant electric blue. Unlike many other cichlids, this pattern extends through the dorsal and caudal fins.

  • Monomorphic: Both males and females look nearly identical. This is rare for Malawi cichlids, where females are often drab. In P. demasoni, both sexes display the same intense blue.

  • Size: They are true dwarfs, typically reaching only 6 to 8 cm in length.

Temperament & Social Structure

  • Aggression: They are notorious for being highly aggressive for their size. They are extremely intolerant of their own kind and other fish with similar blue-and-black vertical stripes.

  • The "Overcrowding" Strategy: To manage their aggression in an aquarium, hobbyists typically keep them in large groups (12 or more). This disperses the dominant male's attention so no single fish is bullied too severely.

  • Hyperactive: They are constant movers, darting in and out of rockwork and claiming small territories with high intensity.

Dietary Requirements

  • Herbivores: In the wild, they graze on "aufwuchs" (algae and small organisms living in it) from rocks.

  • Dietary Sensitivity: They have long intestinal tracts and are highly susceptible to Malawi Bloat if fed too much animal protein or fat.

    • Best Diet: High-quality spirulina flakes or pellets and blanched vegetables (like spinach or zucchini).

Habitat Preferences

  • Rock Dwellers: The name "Mbuna" means "rockfish," and P. demasoni embodies this. They require an aquarium filled with stacks of rocks, caves, and crevices to feel secure.

  • Water Chemistry: Like all Lake Malawi cichlids, they thrive in:

    • pH: 7.8 – 8.6

    • Hardness: Very hard, alkaline water.

    • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C.

Quick Comparison: Demasoni vs. Similar Species

Feature P. demasoni Chindongo saulosi (Male)
Size Smaller (6–8 cm) Larger (9–10 cm)
Bars 6–7 very distinct bars 5–6 less crisp bars
Females Bright blue (same as male) Bright Yellow

Design Tip: If you are setting up a dedicated Malawi tank, P. demasoni looks incredible when contrasted against yellow Labidochromis (Yellow Labs), as the "bumblebee" yellow and deep blue colors create a high-end visual pop.
